What can you do to help keep your email private? One important step is that you refrain from sending email over an intranet at work; you can almost count on such email being monitored. The next most vulnerable link is access to your computer; anyone with access to your computer potentially has access to information stored on or processed by that computer... including your email. A password-secured log on procedure can help keep your computer secure, but it does not guarantee privacy. Perhaps the least likely threat to your privacy is interception of an email during transit over your private internet access account. Just as it is possible to "tap" a telephone line or "bug" a therapist's office, it is possible to intercept email messages. Possible, but not very likely. If the possibility of email interception feels too risky to you, I also offer an encrypted email exchange.

The encrypted email exchange option

SAFe-mail is a web-based encrypted email service. You can sign up for a free account that is, strangely enough, free. Once you have set up your safe-mail account (and Headworks time-bank, more on that later), we can exchange encrypted emails. All you need do is send emails from your safe-mail account to mine (my safe-mail address is headworks@safe-mail.net), and I will return the favor. Using safe-mail, our email exchange will be encrypted and secure. The downside? It's a bit more cumbersome. For example, my emails won't arrive in your normal email inbox, you will need to make a special trip to safe-mail to retrieve them; to access your account, you must remember your password and user name; composing emails at safe-mail is a bit awkward, with limited options. For these and other reasons, using safe-mail is less convenient than simply sending unencrypted emails. If you need heightened security, however, this option seems like an excellent choice!
